Xi’an, China, 2011

The design of the Xi’An office tower combines several concepts into a powerful new architectural symbol for China Life and for the city of Xi’An. From the symbolic role of China Life in society, to the corporate culture of China Life, to the architectural character of ancient Xi’An, the design has multiple layers of meaning which combine to create a landmark building. As a provider of life insurance, China Life is responsible for the most fundamental aspect of people’s lives, and is intimately involved in the metaphoric circle of life. It is a symbol of balance and security, and the foundation for a life of stability and prosperity. The building design is an abstraction of this idea, with two towers connected at their base and top forming a continuous loop or circle. The overall image projects a feeling of calm strength. Additionally, the building form represents the interaction and cooperation intrinsic to the culture of China Life. This idea is an important element in the daily life of its employees, and is a key to the corporation’s continuing success. The building form abstractly represents this idea, both in terms of its outward appearance, with a physical connection between the towers, as well as internally, where the connection of the bridge and the base provide a mixing chamber where people constantly come into contact and interact socially and professionally. These special areas include a generous lobby which is open to the 4th fl oor, conference and meeting rooms, and recreation/lounge areas.
